This is a paradoxical statement. And though it appears self-contradictory, it contains a profound truth. Like the above statement in Wordsworth’s poem The Rainbow, Milton also once said, “The child shows the man as the morning shows the day.” Exceptions are, of course, there. A day beginning with a bright morning might end in a storm. But those exceptions are very rare. On the other hand, the statement under reference is a general rule. It means that the conduct of a child indicates what he will be in adulthood. Just as the weather of the day is judged from the morning, so the conduct of the child is taken as an indication of what his character will be when he will grow later on. The young mind is very susceptible to impression, good or bad. And such impressions will last throughout one’s life. It is, therefore, very important to bring up a child in such a manner that his character may be given the desired bent. We must not forget—one’s essential personality always remains what it promises to be in one’s childhood.
