It is a common old saying which holds good in our life. Charity should begin from bottom to top, not from top to bottom. Any act of goodness can have solid foundations only if it spreads from the nearest to the farthest. An act of charity must not be undertaken by retaining starvation at home. Any good act must start from one’s environment. Similarly, it is sheer hypocrisy to preach to others what we do not practise ourselves. Everybody shouts that there are corruption and nepotism in the country, but when the same person is placed in a position of authority, he, himself often gets involved in such corruption! Of course, there are some great men who sacrifice their lives for the betterment of the greater society. They do not take care of himself or his kith and kin. They do not limit their activities in any narrow boundary. That is also too big an ideal for a common man. The golden mean for a common man is to take care of his family at first, and then he may extend his good spirit to his neighbours, and so on.
