Some say the goddess of fortune is blind as she bestows her bounty to whom she likes, and it is often whimsically. But if we analyse the true state of things, we find that she is always impartial. She gives her best gifts to the most deserving, to those who are bold and brave. A cowardly man falters at every step. How can he succeed in any enterprise? He is almost faint with fear. When he had launched upon an enterprise, and failure falls to his lot, he is completely undone. But a bold man knows that every adventure is attended with risks, and he takes the risks with cool courage. He calculates where he may fail and is careful to avoid it. He does not get nervous when he is called upon to show his power to the best advantage. He is always equal to the occasion. Such a man scarcely meets with failures. And when he is doomed to fail, he gets the courage to face it in a sportsman’s spirit. He does not lose heart, for he has the strength of mind. In fact, boldness consists of one’s confidence and intelligence. Such a person ultimately wins the favour of the goddess of fortune. And so “None but the brave deserves the fair” — is an oft-quoted saying which testifies the truth.
