There are two ways of impressing a thing on others. It may be done either by words or by deeds, rather, by precepts or by examples. By precept we can only instruct a man what to be done and the reason why it should be done. But very often the impression created by our advice lasts only as long as the word rings in his years. In other words, a precept makes only a temporary impression. Students are taught many good things at home or at school. But in spite of that, only a very few obtain the stimulus to be noble and great in life. It can be better done if some good examples are set before them. Parents who wish their children to be good and noble must themselves set before them such good examples. Otherwise, no good result will come out of mere advice. If the parents themselves are not good and give only some good advice, the children cannot be expected to be good, as they are bound to imitate their parents. If you preach something good and do not follow it yourself, no one will pay heed to you. On the other hand, if a man lives an ideal life of purity and devotion, you will find many who come into contact with him and try to follow him. And so if the leaders of the society are not honest and steady, most of the followers will soon fall back. Biographies of great men may also serve us some good examples for following their footsteps.
