Essay on Noise Pollution or Sound Pollution

Sound is a symptom of life. The existence of life is felt and perceived through the presence of noise. But loud and shrill sound creates a caco-phoney instead of the symphony. Of late, noise pollution or sound pollution has reached an alarming stage in human life. It is chasing us in almost every step of life. In schools, colleges, offices, and even in hospitals we have an explosion of deafening sound. The quietness of our life has totally vanished. Even within our homes noise has been chasing us.

Many are the causes of this problem of noise pollution. Microphones blare out day in and day out. Film songs are played on at the top volume even from the wayside betel shops. There are aggressive bullying horns of automobiles. During religious festivals, crackers and bombs are burst indiscriminately. The shouting of slogans also contributes not a little to sound pollution. One can even hear slogan-shouting in hospitals! The extent of noise pollution has already crossed the normal limits of human endurance. As a result, people in general and especially the children, the sick and the aged persons face a lot of trouble, Noise pollution causes disturbance of sleep and studies of the students. It also causes restlessness and pain for the sick and the aged. It produces strain, nausea, high blood pressure, heart palpitation, indigestion, brain disorder etc. Very often people run the risk of becoming deaf and severe nervous breakdown, or psychological imbalance.

It is high time, to take necessary steps for checking sound pollution. We have to pass strict laws to take effective measures against the misuse of microphones, People must be made aware of the dangers of sound pollution. Of late, judicial bodies are taking steps to control the sound pollution. As per order of the Hon’ble High Courts and the Supreme Court sound from microphones must be limited within 90 decibels and it too cannot be done after 10 pm. However, everyone must cultivate the virtues of quietness in domestic as well as in public life. Public awareness in this regard is an urgent need to check the sound pollution.
